Travel Apps: The Good, The Bad, and The Forgettable

Technology has dramatically changed our way of life. Today, people rely more on their smartphones to plan trips and vacations using navigation and travel apps. But, did you know that all apps aren’t created the same?

While some apps are great and provide you with everything that you need to know about your trip, others have proven to be duds. In fact, the travel app that you choose to install on your smartphone can have a major impact on your overall travel experience.

So, which travel apps should you use and which ones should you avoid? Here are the top three best and top three worst travel apps.

The Best

Google Translate

Google translate is one of the must-have travel apps. The app had an update in October 2018 which allows you to take photographs that you can highlight, add text, and even translate into English.

The previous update of the app allowed users to translate English into other languages but not vice versa. You will find the Google Translate app useful when reading store signs, restaurant food menus, and street signs.

This app may also come in handy when you want to book local taxi or limousine transportation service. The Google Translate app offers you almost everything that you need to make your international trip a little bit easier.  The app is available for both iOS and Android.

ELK Currency Converter

This is another travel app that you will use frequently during your travel. Keep in mind that it is vital to have a currency converter app that is easy to use and read. The Elk currency converter app is one of the best currency converters in the travel industry.

It plays a critical role especially when you are traveling abroad. The app provides a clean and clutter-free design that allows for easy currency conversions. When you enter one conversion in the app, it will give you the result in large numbers.

Drops

This app makes it easy to learn any foreign language. It comes with a highly interactive design and easy-to-follow instructions that will make things a little bit easier for you. The app features over 30 dialects including Mandarin, Arabic, and Icelandic.

You receive one lesson every day that helps to get the most out of your international trip. You can start using the free version that has daily limits and only upgrade to the premium version once you are sure that you need to learn more.

The Worst

Euro Railways

If you are planning an international trip to Europe, you are probably looking for an app that can help you with bookings and schedule. Don’t waste your time downloading the Euro Railways app that has nothing to offer.

Other than the interactive app that you will see in Playstore or Appstore, there is nothing useful that you will get by opening the app. The app consists of outdated PDF files that are useless to travelers. The creators of this app didn’t bother to design an app that provides real-time information that can help you plan your trip.

iWasHere

Sharing your memorable moments with friends and family has become quite popular on social media. Some mobile apps have come up with entertaining and interactive ways to help you share such moments.

The iWasHere tried to do that, but it lacks an intuitive design which makes it a difficult app to use. In fact, the app was designed with stalkers in mind and nothing else. This app isn’t useful in any way, and we would recommend that you look for an alternative to it.

American Airlines

Are planning a trip to the US, don’t think that the American Airlines app will offer you valuable information that can help you plan your trip.

Although the app is designed to provide real-time information to travelers, users who have installed it complain about the new builds that slows everything down and doesn’t open on iPhones. When the app opens, it will push you to the company’s mobile website for core functions.
